Back To Marketing Basics

September 29, 2026

With the new school season well underway, September is a good time to revisit a few marketing fundamentals. While there is no shortage of new trends, tools, and buzzwords, long-term success is still built on a handful of core principles. Here are some that stand the test of time.

Know Your Customer

‍
Effective marketing begins with understanding who you're trying to reach. It helps to take a step back and consider your audience. What are their priorities? What challenges are they facing? How does what you offer solve that challenge for them? What factors influence their decisions?

The better you understand your customers, the easier it becomes to create messages that resonate.

Know What Makes You Different

‍
In most cases, today's consumers have more options than ever before. This makes it important to clearly communicate why your business is the right choice for them.

What sets your company apart might be exceptional service, specialized expertise, product selection, convenience, local knowledge, or a unique customer experience. Whatever it is, it should be something customers value and can easily understand.

A clear and memorable value proposition helps customers recognize your strengths and gives them a compelling reason to choose you. A clearly stated value proposition can also guide your team, helping ensure the customer experience reflects the promises made in your advertising.

Communicate Value Clearly

‍
Features describe your product or service. The benefit is why a customer cares about that feature. For example, a heated driveway’s automated moisture and temperature sensor is a feature. A benefit is knowing that the driveway is safe on a snowy morning without anyone having to get out of bed early to shovel.

A benefit might solve a problem, save time, reduce stress, or deliver some other desired outcome. Effective marketing helps connect the dots between the feature and the benefit.

Clarity is equally important. One focused message is often more memorable than communicating a lot of details. Some advertising channels allow for more details than others, but audiences should still come away with one key idea.

Make the Next Step Obvious

‍
Whether the goal is awareness, consideration, or a purchase, each marketing effort should support the next stage in the customer's decision-making process. When a specific action is the goal, the next step should be clear, concise, and easy to follow. Examples might be visiting your website, requesting a quote, following your social media channels, making a reservation, or stopping by your location. A clear CTA can help turn interest into action.

Measure What Matters

‍
Technology now allows for more attribution than ever before. Even traditional media like radio has caught up to digital with performance measurement through platforms like Validate Audio Attribution. These insights can help guide spending and the development of creative, allowing businesses to fine-tune campaigns for better and better results over time.

Fundamentals for a Reason

‍
Marketing will continue to evolve, but the fundamentals remain remarkably consistent. Businesses that understand their customers, communicate their value clearly, differentiate themselves from the competition, guide customers toward action, and learn from results are better positioned for long-term success.
